Unfulfilled human potential is quite possibly, the greatest loss for any country.  

Everyone possesses a distinctive set of skills which if properly developed, can lead to personal excellence. On a larger scale, it can mean making a positive impact in the world. However, lacking access and exposure to resources such as education, training or opportunities often impede one’s ability to do so. 

Programmes conducted by our partners have shown that the key to discovering the full extent of one’s abilities lies in an environment where individuals are able to explore their passions and talents.  

This year’s theme is “Igniting Possibilities: Semarak Potensi Kita“, spotlighting the power of human potential and how tapping into it could ultimately mean greater innovation, creativity, and progress for the nation – true for both our partners and the communities they support.

WHO WE ARE

Yayasan Hasanah (Hasanah) was established on July 1st 2015 as an independent grant-making foundation. 

Building upon almost a decade of corporate social responsibility initiatives by Khazanah Nasional (Khazanah), Hasanah enables collective impact in various societal and environmental areas, complementing Khazanah’s efforts of Advancing Malaysia. 

Presently, Hasanah —alongside grant recipients and other partners — contributes to 15 of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. 

True to our name and in the spirit of facilitating transformation, we believe in going beyond funding assistance alone. This includes adding value to the developmental stages of every long-term project we support. Along the way, this also means indirectly developing the partners’ organisational capacity. 

To us, being a convenor, collaborator and catalyst for change is an unwavering commitment to continuously advancing Malaysia, one person at a time, across all layers of society. 

Hasanah means “doing good” or “good deeds” in Arabic.

CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE

As a grant-making foundation committed to advancing Malaysia across all layers of society, Hasanah recognises the critical significance of nation-building and our duty in this regard.

Yayasan Hasanah’s birth in 2015 — following nine years of corporate social responsibility efforts previously driven by Khazanah Nasional — came with an important mandate.

Our role as a convenor, collaborator and catalyst puts us in a unique position to affect change. And so, we have long made it part of our mission to contribute to pertinent environmental, social, and economic issues in meaningful and impactful ways.

We are fully aware that inclusive and equitable nation building is a long-term process that requires sustained effort and investment over many years, and therefore a collective responsibility that must be shouldered by everyone. Equally as important is the believe that true social impact demands a balance of both, a rigorous bottom-up engagement and approach, as well as a robust policy support and environment.

Thus, as we strive towards economic and social progress, it is important that we adopt a whole-of-society approach, one that does not rely solely on the efforts of the government alone, but one that leverages on the strengths of the private and philanthropic sectors. It is through this approach that we have seen the successes of our Public-Private-People partnerships that have enabled varying impacts that you will see in our report.

Our work in the third sector is not made up by acts of charity. Instead, it is founded upon the basis of justice-based philanthropy. For an advanced nation to be a reality, access to necessities, socioeconomic independence, and agency over their lives must first be available to everyone.

Nation-building is a marathon, not a sprint. Hence, it is the enduring, sustainable endeavours that will make all the difference.

Hasanah is proud to be a part of this long-term initiative in building a prosperous, vibrant, inclusive Malaysia which is made possible by our partners and stakeholders representing the public, private and people ecosystem, who have always supported us, and I hope will continue to do so in the years to come.

REFLECTIONS

Putting together The Hasanah Report always presents a time for reflecting, and this year reaffirms with certainty what we have known to be true all along — people are at the core of everything we do.

Without a doubt, empowering people have always been the beating heart of our organisation. This includes the 2.4 million people assisted since Hasanah’s inception and the more than 470 civil society partner organisations and social enterprises that we have worked with since 2015, furthering our mission of advancing Malaysia across all layers of society, one person at a time. Truly, the collective choir is stronger than the single voice.

The theme for The Hasanah Report 2022 is: “Igniting Possibilities: Semarak Potensi Kita”, spotlights the power of human potential and how tapping into it can unleash greater innovation, spark personal agency, build resilience and give power and confidence to the individuals. Simply put, empowered individuals are at the heart of a progressive society, and Alhamdulillah, is also at the heart of everything we do at Hasanah.

I would like to mention two record breaking initiatives last year. First, Arts for All Seasons or ArtsFAS, has grown to become the single largest annual grant programme for arts, heritage, and culture in Malaysia. In 2022, ArtsFAS in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance (MOF) funded 107 shows and live performances around Malaysia, supporting the livelihoods of 3,332 local artists and performers, with a record grant value of RM4.15mn. This has allowed us to do more for the sector’s economic viability for artists and performers, who keep our national identity alive and thriving.

Second, a new initiative launched for the first time ever, the Hasanah Social Enterprise Fund (HSEF) which supports the organisational needs of social enterprises. RM4.64 million was approved to 32 SEs, scaling up their capability and capacity tremendously. Funds went to upgrading their facilities, investing in machineries, establishing digital platforms and hiring talents.

We are all a FORCE FOR GOOD and I cannot emphasise enough how important it is for us to collaborate and support each other, coordinate our collective efforts, communicate and amplify our messages, connect the dots and break silos, and finally invest in our collective capacity and capability!

For this shared progress and success, allow me to first thank all our partners for their dedication and hard work on the ground. We especially would also like to thank the Ministry of Finance, MOF, for continuing to support societal needs via the matching grants through the Hasanah Special Grants running into its fourth year this year. And not forgetting our stakeholders and government and policy partners, our Board of Trustees and last but not least the super squad at Yayasan Hasanah. These are never just the work of a single entity, and because of that we humbly again thank all our 470+ partners across 609 projects over the years with whom we’ve grown alongside our eight-year journey. Through this collective power of WE, we were able to reach more people in need and scale our impacts.
