Addressing Post-pandemic Learning Loss
Reading, writing and counting are foundational for any student. But with COVID-19 disrupting lessons for a prolonged time, many are struggling with the basics.
Yayasan Hasanah’s Education Head, Dr Nur Anuar Abdul Muthalib shares that in Perlis, “2,300 Tahap 1 students lacked proficiency in the 3Ms (membaca, menulis dan mengira) or reading, writing and counting.”
This is the very issue that Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) and Wesser Solutions Sdn Bhd’s Literacy and Numeracy Rehabilitation Project want to solve.
It enriches the existing Program Pemulihan Khas which, since the 1960s, has helped students who face problems mastering their 3Ms.
But that’s not the project’s only objective. Qualified but unemployed graduates are also appointed as student mentors, while university scholars prepare effective teaching modules.
Cikgu Nur Naqiah Mahadzir of SK Jelempok expresses excitement that Kelas Pemulihan is finally getting the attention it — and the students — deserve.
She attributes the students’ progress in reading to the efforts of graduate mentors. The gadgets provided throughout the project kept students interested and focused in classes, reducing incidences of them skipping school.
One such student who has benefited from this project is Tahap 2 Umar Firas who improved so much that he represented his school in Pertandingan Kemahiran Literasi dan Numerasi Awal (PKLNA) Antara Sekolah Rendah Negeri Perlis Tahun 2022.
Project Leader, Prof Madya Ir Dr Umi Fazara Md Ali is happy to report that by the end of the project, “80% of the 2,300 students from 74 schools displayed literacy and numeracy improvements from Tahap Pemulihan (TP) 1 and TP2 to TP3 and TP4,” alluding to its glowing success.
